Sacrificing pension income to SRI concerns

The general level of education, gender, financial literacy and relative prosperity are some of the predictors of a preference to invest in SRI, even if that means the probably sacrifice of some percentage of pension income. Those are the findings of the study “Social Norms in Pension Funds” by Tilburg University researchers Arian Borgers and Rachel Pownall, both members of the Tilburg Sustainability Center.
The smarter the greener? Education and gender matter more than income

People with a higher education – university or higher – placed a greater emphasis on social and environmental wellbeing than economic wellbeing. And women were much more likely to put social wellbeing before financial wellbeing, show Tilburg University Adjunct Associate Professor Rachel Pownall and Lancaster University Professor Dakshina De Silva in their paper “Going Green: Does it Depend on Education, Gender, or Income?”.
Smart thermostats help ‘energy illiterate’ homeowners

Conscious and careful use of residential energy can have enormous positive impact on both the environment and the homeowner’s pocketbook. But 43% of Dutch homeowners have absolutely no idea how much gas they use each month, and 30% don’t turn the thermostat down before going to bed, according to a study conducted by Dirk Brounen (Tilburg University), Nils Kok (Maastricht University) and John Quigley (University of California). With awareness-raising and smart thermometers, they say, consumer’s energy-literacy can rise — and the waste of energy will fall.
