Description of the chair of prof. dr. C.P. Veerman:

Rural development in European perspective (Wageningen/ Tilburg)

The process of the unification of Europe started more than fifty years ago with the gradual integration and expansion of the European Union. The chair focuses on cases with respect to sustainable rural development in Europe seen from a broad perspective of social, economical, and technological changes. The policy side is the keynote and demands a continuing analysis. Three approaches are combined:

1. the international environment in which the Netherlands operate within Europe;
2. the position and function of the rural area within society and the physical environment (especially nature and environment);
3. the way in which institutional and governmental choices may contribute to a desirable and sustainable development of the rural area, with special attention to a balanced application of the three P's (people, planet, profit).

The activities at Tilburg University centre around Agribusiness:

• Prices of food and feed;
• Climate change, water, and energy;
• Income distribution.

At Wageningen University the activities centre around Rural activities:

• Consequences of (rural) policy;
• Nature preservation.
