Reading contemporary adolescent novels multiculturally

Adolescence as the transition stage between childhood and adulthood is usually considered as a period in life during which concepts of identity undergo rapid and radical changes. One of the major concerns of the adolescent novel as narratives of personal maturation therefore is the exploration of subjectivity. The central theme of adolescent novels is the relationship between the self and others, between the individual and society. Because of this essential characteristic of the genre it could be expected that in culturally stratified societies as the Netherlands and Belgium, the adolescent novel covers the development of identities of adolescents from all parallel cultures living in these societies. Through a quantitative analysis of contemporary Dutch and Flemish adolescent novels (published since the 1990?s) this study investigates how well-founded this expectation is. In a next phase of this study, a qualitative analysis will focus on how adolescents from non-western cultures are represented and how these representations can be interpreted against the background of the development of a sense of self in a multicultural, globalizing society.
