Expertise

PhD research: festival Musica Sacra Maastricht. Discourses on sacrality.

This research focuses on outlooks on and experiences of sacrality in our contemporary culture. In the continuously changing cultural landscape, the festival Musica Sacra Maastricht manifests itself as a platform on which to explore and experience the full scope of sacrality by means of musical performances.

This research studies four involved groups in the festival - the program committee, performers, audience and critics. The experiences and processes of meaning making by these groups around the festival are analysed to trace and understand discourses on music and sacrality.

This research explores questions on the relationship between music and sacrality, both resulting from performance; the relation between the festival philosophy and festival practice; and the ways in which the festival is actually being produced through reciprocal power and influence between the four involved groups.
