Diversity in cultural participation in a multicultural society

Research indicates that competences and attitudes are important theoretical constructs affecting cultural participation. However, when a society becomes more multicultural diversity in subjective norms of reference groups one identifies with as well as accessibility of cultural artifacts, gain importance. The project has three spearheads:

  1. Audience development (enhancing participation in the arts).
  2. Language policy implementation in the educational domain.
  3. Attitude research: Attitude change and the Attitude-Behavior relation.

The MACO-model (Motivation, Ability, Competence and Opportunity to participate) provides a general framework to explore these domains. The model suggests that differences in participation (in the arts, reading or (effectiveness of) educational programs) can be attributed to four barriers: lack of motivation, lack of competence, lack of abilities, and lack of opportunities. By identifying the barriers for different target groups, one can develop effective programs and/or policies to enhance participation.
