These cases are first of all selected in view of their connection (in a broad sense) to globalization processes, such as (inter)national migration movements, internationalization, and modernization. They are also characterized by the fact that they are situated in educational contexts and function on different scales (individual, institutional, (inter)national). Some examples are Surinam (empirical evidence for language policy development), Eritrea (consequences of mother tongue policy for literacy teaching), East Timor (historical- critical analysis of adult literacy programs), The Netherlands (language policy for indigenous and non-indigenous languages in education), China (policies for English as a language of globalization) Depending on the research questions that emerge from the cases under investigation as part of the research process, choices will be made regarding the (qualitative and quantitative) methodologies to be applied. The project wants to contribute to a better understanding of locally situated cases and on the basis hereof to the theoretical advancement of existing language policy and planning frameworks.
