Expertise
Within the project "The building blocks of language", I focused on the question what illiterate and literate monolingual and bilingual children regard as the basic units of language. For this, I have conducted a set of nine 'offline' and 'online' tasks among Turkish, Dutch and Turkish-Dutch children aged 4-9.
The questions that I asked myself are:
- Do children perceive and use 'words' as basic units, or smaller units (such as phonemes/syllables) or larger units (such as consituents or 'constructions')?
- Do the units that children most easily segment and process relate to literacy?
- How are the units that children most easily segment and process in language related to typological background and bilingualism?
