Expertise

  • In our research group, we address the use of behavioral cues (visual - facial expressions, body activation; and vocal- changes in speech melody, intensity, tempo and timbre) in human and human-computer interaction. We make use of the latest approaches available in the data-scientific toolbox in order to employ automatic techniques, a.o. in comparison to traditional behavioral methods.

My current research focuses on the following themes:

  1. Audiovisual expressions of empathy, in particular in (e)Health communication; the relation between different types of imitative behavior and empathy (with Kiek Tates).
  2. The relation between general cognitive functions (inhibition, cognitive flexibility, and working memory) to prosocial behavior, including imitation and empathy (with Kiek Tates and Rozanne van Diggelen). Recently, I started looking into the relation between cognitive control and learning in adolescents (with Marie José Navis), in the context of serious gaming (with Pieter Spronck and Giuseppe Maggiore).
  3. The effect of individual differences in auditory perception (local vs. global focus, analytic vs. synthetic type of listening) and its effect in various domains, including reading skills in NT1 and NT2 learners (with Maria Mos and Chiara de Jong) and imitative behavior (with Eric Postma).
  4. The use of data mining techniques in social media and technology research, particularly the mobile phone culture in youth (with Mariek Vanden Abeele).
