Two-factor authentication

Logging on with the Authenticator app for Tilburg University applications

Published: 13th February 2023 Last updated: 11th May 2023

Tilburg University is committed to securely protecting your data. One method of improving data security is to use Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) when logging into applications. Therefore, MFA will be installed for access to several Tilburg University applications in the coming months.

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is an authentication method whereby you as an online user have to successfully complete multiple steps to access an application. At Tilburg University, this means that, in addition to entering your password (something you know), you also verify your login in the Microsoft Authenticator App (something you have). What is Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)?

Why MFA?

Tilburg University is committed to securely protecting your data. To achieve this, we continuously work to improve our information security. Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is part of this effort. A mere password is not always sufficient. By introducing an extra step, we greatly increase the security of our data. It is a small additional action, but an important measure to increase the security of our information and data: small effort, big impact. With this method, it is no longer sufficient for a malicious party who only knows your password to access your data and information.

What’s going to change?

MFA is already being used for a limited number of applications. If you want to use these applications, you log in with your password and verify your login with the Authenticator app on your smartphone. This will not change. However, in the coming months, the use of MFA will be extended to more applications. This means that you may be asked to log in with the Authenticator app more often. It does not mean that you need to log in for every application separately. Once you have used the MFA method (password + Authenticator App) to log in, you do not need to repeat this procedure for every other application you want to use.

What do I need to do?

If you have already worked with the Authenticator app from your Tilburg University account, you don’t need to do anything. If you have not yet installed the Authenticator app and linked it to your account, this is the moment to do so. More information on MFA and instructions for setting it up can be found on the Multi Factor Authentication webpage.

Exam applications

Since you are not allowed to use your smartphone during exams, we have opted, for the time being, not to use MFA for access to applications during exams.
