Careful handling of personal data and data

How do I store and share my information securely?

Storing information in the right places and sharing it safely are important parts of working safely. This reduces the risk of data breaches. Moreover, by storing your work in the right place, you ensure that your work can be taken over by a colleague. This is for example important when you are on holiday or if you are absent for a longer period of time due to illness. On this page you will find several points of interest for keeping and sharing information safe.

Safely storing and sharing files

Data encryption

You can encrypt your entire storage disk/device by means of Bitlocker. Do you have a device from Tilburg University that is equipped with Windows 10? In that case, Bitlocker is already enabled by default.

Do you have a PC at home that is equipped with Windows Home? Then unfortunately Bitlocker does not work.

Files with sensitive data

In addition to encrypting your storage disk/device, it is also recommended to encrypt files containing sensitive data separately. This is done with 7-Zip. See the 'encrypt your data with & 7-zip' tab under 'IT security'.

Using a USB flash drive

If there is data on a USB flash drive, make sure that this data is removed from the flash drive and stored in a safe place. A flash drive can easily be lost or stolen.

If it is still necessary to put files on a USB stick, use an encrypted USB stick using Bitlocker.

Safe e-mailing

Always use your Tilburg University mail account when sending work related communication. Do not use private accounts on, e.g.,  Google Drive and OneDrive. You can of course use your One Drive work account.

We advise you not to share personal data files via Dropbox, WeTransfer, and Google Drive. We have not entered into a processing agreement with these parties because they do not comply with the GDPR.

Use SURF-filesender if you wish to send an e-mail containing confidential files.
