Prof. dr. A. (Sacha) Prechal

Alexandra (Sacha) Prechal (Prague, 1959) is a Dutch legal scholar. Since 2010, she has been a judge at the Court of Justice of the European Union.

She is also a Professor of European law in Utrecht. Prechal grew up in Czechoslovakia. Shortly after the Prague Spring, she came to the Netherlands. After gymnasium, she studied law at the University of Groningen.

After her studies, she became an Assistant Professor in European law in Maastricht and worked at the Court of Justice as a legal secretary for several years. She then became a lecturer at the UvA, where she obtained her PhD with distinction (cum laude) in 1995 with a thesis on the functioning of European directives. After her PhD, Prechal became Professor of European Law in Tilburg and, from 2003, in Utrecht. Prechal conducted research on constitutional processes in Europe, including human rights protection and protection against discrimination.

In 2010, Sacha Prechal was appointed judge at the Court of Justice of the European Union.
