Tilburg University 90 years

Small Encyclopedia

On the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the university, an encyclopedia will be written that draws a picture of the university's past and present with topics arranged in alphabetical order.

Tilburg University was founded in 1927 as the Roomsch Katholieke Handelshoogeschool, a school for higher education in the discipline of Economics. The number of students was 28, the number of professors 5. Due to the increasing number of students the university moved in 1962 to the current campus, to the Cobbenhagen Building. This building by architect Bedaux soon showed to be not big enough to accommodate the growth of the university, after the schools of Law and Social Sciences were established in 1963. Since then the university developed rapidly, nowadays with a number of more than 14.000 students and about 3.000 staff members. Together they’re the Tilburg University community, laboring on our beautiful, much appreciated campus.

The number 90 – or numbers related to it – plays a role in the way the encyclopedia is organized. Thus there are 270 entries on a range of topics covering education and research, professors, student life, the campus, and important developments. The topics are presented in an accessible way and illustrated with many photographs. Staff, students, alumni and retirees will be involved in writing the texts. Nine alumni – from all decades - were asked to give their view on ‘their’ university’.

The encyclopedia is in Dutch, but contains a brief history in English as well – meant for our international staff and students. As a spin-off, a wiki site will be released: wiki.tilburguniversity.edu, a portal with various entries on our university, in both Dutch and English. In the beginning of 2018, a small wiki editorial board will be appointed, after which all staff, students, and alumni – and anybody else who feels connected to the university – will be invited to edit and add entries. In Dutch as well as in English.

The small encyclopedia is published at the end of 2017, in which our 90th anniversary was celebrated. It was a year with a wide variety of events in which attention was given to past and present – a variety reflected in the entries in the encyclopedia. The regional institution that started in 1927 with 28 students developed in 90 years into a university operating worldwide, with over 14,000 students and more than 3,000 staff. This little encyclopedia clearly shows that Tilburg University is appreciated as an organization with a special character.
