Unemployment during the Great Recession feeds left-wing populism; unauthorized immigration flows feed right-wing populism
27th June 2019In the past decade, there has been a great rise in populism in many western democracies. This has led to the emergence of radical and populist politicians. In his PhD research, Shuai Chen investigats the influence of recent unemployment during the Great Recession and the vast influx of unauthorized immigrants on the growth of populism. He shows there is a difference between the populism caused by economic factors and the populism caused by cultural factors.

First-Ever SDG Index and Dashboards Report for European Cities

Eijffinger: does populism threaten the independence of the ECB?
19th June 2019This week, the annual ECB Forum was held in Sintra, Portugal, with all the leaders of the international banking world. Among them was Tilburg's professor of Financial Economics, Sylvester Eijffinger. Eijffinger asked the panel, including Mario Draghi, President of the ECB, whether the rise of populism in Europe poses a threat to the independence of the European Central Bank (ECB).

Willem Buijink receives Anthony G. Hopwood Award for Academic Leadership
14th June 2019Professor Willem Buijink, emeritus Professor of Business Economics at Tilburg University, has received the Anthony Hopwood Prize 2019. The prize was awarded by the European Accounting Association (EAA) at a ceremony at the EAA Annual Congress in Pathos, Cyprus, 29th-31th May 2019.

Johan van Leeuwaarden appointed as TiSEM Professor of Stochastic Operations Research
11th June 2019As of June 1, 2019, Professor Johan van Leeuwaarden holds the Chair in Stochastic Operations Research (SOR). At Tilburg University, van Leeuwaarden works at the Econometrics and Operations Research department of the Tilburg School of Economics and Management (TiSEM). SOR is concerned with the mathematical analysis of systems whose outcome is not fully predictable, and to some extent determined by randomness.

Bart Dierynck appointed as TiSEM Professor of Management Accounting
11th June 2019Tilburg University has appointed dr. Bart Dierynck as Professor of Management Accounting at the Department of Accountancy in the Tilburg School of Economics and Management (TiSEM), effective June 1, 2019. Management accounting is concerned with the provision of information within firms to develop and implement strategies.
