Tilburg University has appointed prof. dr. ir. Jan Fransoo as Professor of Operations and Logistics Management at the Department Management in the Tilburg School of Economics and Management (TiSEM), effective November 1, 2020. Professor Fransoo’s research focuses on operations, logistics, and supply chain management decision making in the retail, food, pharmaceutical and transport industries.

Research

His main line of research studies retail supply chains in developing markets, where the dominant form of grocery retail consists of millions of nanostores: very tiny family-operated stores that serve billions of people at the base of the global pyramid. He studies both the logistics supplying these stores, and the actual operation of the stores themselves, which is heavily influenced by the opportunities of digitization. These stores also play a crucial role in the provision of food to the world’s poor. Therefore Fransoo will contribute to the work of various initiatives at Tilburg University such as the Zero Hunger Lab. His other current work relates to urban retail logistics, sustainable supply chain management, and global container shipping. Currently, he is also interpreting the effects of the Covi-19 pandemic on global supply chains.

Education

Fransoo will teach in the Master Program Supply Chain Management and in CentER’s PhD Program, and he will continue to teach at TIAS Business School.

Jan C. Fransoo holds a Master of Science (ir.) degree in Industrial Engineering and a Doctor of Philosophy (dr.) degree in Operations Management and Logistics, both from Eindhoven University of Technology. He will join Tilburg University from Kuehne Logistics University (KLU) in Hamburg, Germany, where he is a Professor in the same field, and also serves as the University’s Dean of Research. He joined KLU in January 2018 following a tenure of 22 years at Eindhoven University of Technology, where he still holds a courtesy professorship in its Department of Industrial Engineering and Innovation Sciences.

Jan Fransoo

Fransoo has published over 130 academic journal articles and book chapters in prestigious academic journals. He currently serves as Associate Editor of several academic journals. His recent books include Reaching 50 Million Nanostores: Retail Distribution in Emerging Megacities and Sustainable Supply Chains: A Research-Based Textbook on Operations and Strategy.

Fransoo co-founded Dinalog (Dutch Institute for Advanced Logistics), a Netherlands center of excellence in the area of supply chain management, and served as the academic member in the Logistics Top Team setting the national research and innovation agenda in logistics, mandated by the Dutch government.
