Department of Criminal Law

Our department is of multidisciplinary composition and focuses on Dutch and European criminal law and criminal procedure as well as social scientific research of crime and victims. The department provides education and research in the fields of criminal law, criminology, victimology and intercultural forensic psychiatry.

Our research activities

Research of crime is intrinsically practical. The department focuses on material and procedural criminal law, on understanding criminal phenomena and their impact on society and victims, and on tackling crime. Our emphasis in research is on complex types of organized crime and corporate crime, which are in the Netherlands addressed as ‘subversive crime.’ We conduct our research activities in close cooperation with other scientific disciplines and societal partners, such as municipalities and the police.
