The research at Tilburg Law School focuses on understanding the changing societal developments and its impact on interpersonal and institutional relationships and the law. The research projects of PhDs are closely related with the research topics of the Law School. Tilburg Law School is internationally orientated and ranks among the best law schools in Europe. The PhD candidates form a strong and lively community within the Law School.

Employed PhDs

Tilburg Law school offers several ways of obtaining a PhD. As an employee of Tilburg University you have an employment contract and are paid a salary. Employed candidates do research, take courses, may teach and complete a dissertation within a set period of time (three to four years).

Non-employed PhDs

For non-employed PhDs we offer the following possibilities:

On a scholarship

These scholarships can come from foreign governments, international organizations or Dutch funds for foreign PhD candidates. These PhD candidates have their workplace at a department, research center or institute of Tilburg Law School. They are fully involved in the research activities of their department. They usually write their PhD thesis in four years, depending on the scholarship. Please note: Tilburg Law School does not offer any scholarships itself.

As an employee of another employer

You are an employee at a university of applied sciences or a company and your employer provides you a compensation in time and/or funds.

As an external PhD candidate

You work on your thesis in your own time and with your own money.

In addition we offer joint doctorates and we welcome current (PhD) researchers as visiting scholars.
