How to survive in Academia*

Date: Time: 16:00 Location: Black Box, Esplanade Building, Tilburg University

Life as a scientist is not easy. The workload and mental problems among scientists are increasing. Working within the so-called publish-or-perish culture can be stressful. How can you become happy and worry-free again? (language: English)

Time: 16:00-17:30 hrs.  Admission is free. See also Facebook.

Stress is part of the job

In academia, there is a culture of just accepting that stress is part of the job. It is the same for everyone, so just keep going. It’s normal. Get on with it.

Not only must academics publish on their research to remain relevant, but doing so is a requirement—a key performance indicator—at many universities. And on top of this, there are often doubts about the usefulness and reliability of their investigations and fraud cases are regularly reported in the news.

How to survive in academia?

Experiences of scientists: how do they cope?

Enough reasons for psychiatrist Joeri Tijdink to offer therapy sessions to his fellow scientists. He wrote a book** about it and will tell us more about his experiences. What kind of people report stress? What do they dream of and long for? How do they cope with the ever-increasing publication stress and work pressure?

Tijdink comes to the rescue in a cheerful and enthusiastic way. He analyzes the key players at the university, investigates what is bothering scientists, describes the treatment of the eight most common symptoms among scientists, and gives specific advice.

Coach Arjenne Louter will comment and share her experiences.

Speakers

  • Joeri Tijdink (1981) is an Assistant Professor, Amsterdam Academic Medical Center (UMC - VU / VUmc).
  • Arjenne Louter, who made it her job to help PhD students on their way to graduation.

This event is part of a series of events called ‘Perfectly imperfect’, which advocates the acceptance (and sometimes the beauty) of imperfection
