Surrounded by Peeping Toms: the digital panopticon

Night Talk: The recent Facebook data leaks scandal has been a wake-up call for many people. Virtually everything we put on the Internet generates data. Such data can be packaged, traded, and used for constructing individual profiles.

We have entered a world of Peeping Toms, in which other people can observe almost any act we perform online, even when we think it is private and confidential. In this lecture, Jan Blommaert, professor in the department of Culture Studies, will illustrate this new panopticon and outline some of its larger implications.
