Campus - Studium Generale - Epic Poetry Party

Bob Kapteijns

On National Poetry Day, January 30, 2013, Bob Kapteijns was appointed as the youngest Campus Poet ever. The student of psychology managed to convince the jury and the audience during the performances at the Poetry Party, organized for the occasion of selecting a new Campus Poet.

According to the jury, the six entries submitted included a number of excellent poems, but in the end it was Bob’s use of rhythm and sound and the way he captured the audience’s attention that tipped the balance in his favor. Retiring Campus Poet Arthur Kok was on the jury. So were Language Center teacher and former Campus Poet Andrew Cartwright, the presidents of Asset (Martijn Heijnen), Front (Niek de Groot), and Plato (Sven van Grunsven), Judith Schiks of Academic Forum, and Univers editor Jozien Wijkhuijs, making the jury a representative cross-section of campus life at our university.

Bob’s winning poem was Dag Droom (Dutch).

Dag Droom

Een droom buiten plaats en tijden
maar daar toch een hart vervult
zoals de schaduw kan verblijden
van een lot dat is verhuld

Telkens als mijn klokken zwijgen
en mijn bewustzijn wordt gefopt
wordt wat geen verloop kon krijgen
in een bubbel waan gestopt

Dan een deceptie die zich inleidt
als mijn droom zelf wakker schrikt
wanneer de scherpe spitse waarheid

door die tere zeepbel prikt

Less than week after he had been appointed, Bob already made his public debut as Campus Poet during the theater production  Stadspresentatie Campusdichters: Van Toen Tot Nu.
