Current projects

There are developments at Tilburg University in the field of real estate. These include the expansion and renovation of the educational and research facilities, but also the renovation of restorative facilities and the expansion of sports facilities.

New education building

On the northeast corner of the Campus, we have inaugurated a new education building, the Marga Klompé Building, in January 2024. The building is completely ready for education of the future and extremely sustainable. Read more here.

After the inauguration in January, we will still be working on the landscaping. We are going to create a pleasant green area around the building with a focus on biodiversity and water retention. By the spring of 2024, this location on campus will form a beautiful new entrance from the station area.

New build Sports Center

Since 1962, Tilburg University has had its own Sports Center. It is very popular among both students and staff. In order to continue to properly meet the sports needs of the rapidly increasing numbers of student athletes, it is necessary that we expand and redevelop our sports facilities

Parking garage

An increase in students and staff has resulted in an increase in travel movements. Tilburg University is working on a mobility policy that strongly stimulates travel to and from the campus by public transport, bicycle, and other sustainable modes of travel. The possibilities for working from home are also being expanded. These measures have been accelerated in 2021. Nevertheless, there must be sufficient parking space to prevent inconvenience. The parking lot on the Warandelaan side is intended for this purpose. A parking garage is planned in the parking lot on the Warandelaan side for this purpose. The nature and extent of any additional parking required is still being investigated.

Renovation Dante Building

Dante Building houses the offices and some labs of the Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences including the University College. There are also several interschool lecture halls and education spaces in the building and the foyer is one of the most booked spaces for events on campus.

The building dates from 1994 and is scheduled for renovation. As a result, Dante is expected to be out of use during the academic year 2025-2026. Users will be temporarily housed in one of the other buildings on the campus during construction. The need for replacement lecture halls will include the recently completed Marga Klompé Building.

Currently, the Real Estate Management unit, with the assistance of an external housing consultant, is working on identifying the housing needs of the various users. The design phase will start soon. In line with the strategic plans for the campus, the renovation is fully committed to sustainability and circularity.

Maintaining TFT Building

In the adopted campus vision, the former School of Theology (TFT) on the Academielaan was identified as a development site. The current part of the building has a monumental status which makes redesignation difficult. However, this monumental status includes a maintenance liability. The building is in such a poor state of repair that regardless of its redesignation, it is necessary to take an interim step to preserve the building.

To conserve the building, a conservation plan was drawn up.

This conservation plan includes:

  • structurally securing the building for the next 5 years;
  • providing basic facilities to maintain the building safely;
  • installing security features to deter unwanted visitors and enable remote monitoring.

Work starts in February 2024 and will be completed before summer.

Renovation Vidar

In November 2022, the Executive Board decided to support the student rowing sport by, among other things, upgrading the rowing facilities on the canal near the Beekse Bergen in Hilvarenbeek. The facilities are no longer appropriate for Vidar's top-level sports ambitions and also need to be made more sustainable. Together with Vidar’s board, we are working out a plan for renovating the current buildings. We are investigating whether the desire for expansion can also be met within the financial framework.

A final agreement on the investment costs will still have to be made before the actual renovation can begin.

Making Zwijsen Gasless

With our multi-year sustainability goals, we aim to eventually become a carbon-neutral campus. Part of this is disconnecting our buildings from gas as an energy supply in phases. In 2023, we have already realized this for Montesquieu Building, and now Zwijsen Building is on the schedule. We are working out a plan to provide alternative heat generation. At the same time we are looking to eliminate maintenance backlogs so that the building will be in a good state for years to come. We hope to carry out the work in 2024.
