Hatha yoga is based on a system of carefully devised positions, known as the asanas. As you assume each of the asanas, you will feel tension and relaxation in various parts of your body. The objective is to find exactly the right balance.
Yoga helps to develop bodily awareness so that you become more 'in touch' with yourself, resulting in a greater sense of wellbeing, both physical and mental.
Breathing exercises and meditation are also part of the yoga discipline. Breathing is closely allied with the asanas. It is important to make the breath 'free' through exercises and adopting the prescribed positions. Good breathing will help to channel tension out of your body and to make way for relaxation and fulfilment. Consciously thinking about breathing is itself a form of meditation.
A regular weekly routine helps to embed all the benefits of yoga into your day-to-day life.
