Making play out of work?!

Time: 19:30-20:15 hrs. | Location: Cube 219 | Language: English | Category: Night Talk

Playful work design (PWD) offers a bottom-up perspective on the integration of play with work. When employees playfully design their work, they use play during tasks to make their work activities more fun or more competitive. Recently, research has revealed that on days when employees playfully design work, they tend to engage more with their work, have more creative ideas, and perform better. Moreover, when employees design their work to be more playful, they are more effective in dealing with adverse conditions such as hindrance stressors and rumination about all the crises. Hear more about proactive play during work activities and how people actually play at work!

Gamifying Life & the Darker Sides of Technology

Time: 20:15-21:00 hrs. | Location: DZ-1, Dante Building | Language: English Category: Night Talk

Various digital techniques allow you to change reality according to your preferences. Use Deepfake Technology to let the King give your desired ‘alternative’ Christmas speech; assume the body of someone else in a Virtual Reality game; have a love robot fulfil your every desire; you name it. Life will be more fun and funnier, no doubt. But these technologies also have darker sides. Letting a Ukrainian general supposedly order his troops to surrender; hacking Virtual Reality to make it into a dystopia; letting your demented grandma believe she is communicating with her late husband, while in fact she is talking to a Humanoid Robot. What are technologies such as Humanoid Robotics, Deepfake and Augmented & Virtual Reality, what cool and scarry applications do they have and how will they affect social interaction and our shared perception of reality and should robots have rights? These are a small number of questions that this lecture will address.

Night Talk by Bart van der Sloot, associate professor at Tilburg Institute for Law, Technology, and Society (TILT), Tilburg University.

‘Live streaming’: Why we watch others play games

Time: 20:15-21:00 hrs. | Location: DZ-2, Dante Building | Language: English | Category: Night Talk (this is not a livestream 😉).

In recent years live streaming platforms such as Twitch have gained popularity, and this has inspired traditionally non-live social media to also introduce live broadcasts. On Twitch, most broadcasts center around watching others play games. Viewers can interact with each other, and oftentimes also with the ‘streamer’, who can be considered a modern celebrity or influencer. In this talk we will look into the livestreaming phenomenon, the types of people that are active on these platforms, and the effects that the medium can have on its users.

Night Talk led by Jan de Wit, assistant professor at the Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital sciences. Organized by association KWEEK Communications.

During this lecture, we will introduce a new game called “Sustainable Port”, a game that replicates, to a certain extent, decisions that may characterize the development of ports’ environments such as the port of Rotterdam. Such a game will be used to study expertise at the port of Rotterdam and to evaluate if it can raise awareness about the complexity characterizing ports' related decision-making.

This Night talk is given by Gianluca Guglielmo, PhD-candidate of Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences (TSHD) for the Department of Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence. This activity is hosted by student association Flow.

Last Lecture: Stop Bullshitting!

Time: 22:30-23:15 hrs. | Location: DZ-1, Dante Building | Language: English | Category: Night Talk

A great philosopher once remarked that everybody lies. We tell little, white lies. But some influential people tell big lies. Not just liars (or bullshitters) like Bolsonaro, Putin and Trump, but also bad journalists, educational managers and judges that want to be important, do things their way or make money at the expense of others.

These liars make life hard. They have us fight for things like free speech, democracy and justice. I will focus on justice. If bad cops, judges, and crime-journalists would stop bullshitting, then we could focus on advancing our justice system, instead of keeping and protecting it. You know what I mean? Stop wasting our time with lies and bullshit!

Night Talk held by Hans Dooremalen, university teacher in the Department of Philosophy. Organized by study association Extra Muros.
