Roots & Spirit

In this introductory lecture by four ‘backing vocalists’ we are getting to know where the music styles R&B and Gospel come from. What is so specific about Gospel? What has God to with it? Which artists are the trailblazers, the flag bearers and followers of this music? How are these genres intertwined with other forms of music? And of course: can you feel the Power of Gospel?!

You will be taken on a journey to the 'roots' of R&B and Gospel. Names that pass the review are e.g. Harlem Gospel choir, J.J. Hairston and Youthful Praise, Mahalia Jackson, Aretha Franklin and Cory Henry. Singers and (former) students who will speak are:

•             Maria Kostyukova – studied at Prince Claus Conservatoire Groningen

•             Iris Fetter – student at The Royal Conservatory The Hague

•             Annemieke Lezwijn - studied at the Royal Conservatory The Hague

•             Sophie Koole – studied at Codarts Rotterdam

Concert

After the lecture you can enjoy a concert by Young Metropole & Michelle David. The Young Metropole is a unique orchestra with the best musicians from the classical and jazz departments of the Dutch conservatories. Michelle David is one of the greatest (gospel) singers living in the Netherlands. Together with the ‘backing vocals’ who told you everything about the genres shortly before, they will play the ‘Higher Ground’ program later that evening. You will hear a mix of gospel, soul, funk, Afrobeat and jazz. Starting time 20.30hrs, tickets are only 12,50 euro for youngster up to 26 years. This concert is a warmin’up for the Better Get Hit Festival mid January.
