The Unknown Side of Giftedness

Date: Time: 19:30 Location: Cube 01, Cube building, campus Tilburg University

Giftedness (Hoogbegaafdheid in Dutch) is often portrayed in a positive light, with those who have the aptitude for it being seen as superior. However, there is a darker side to it. At this symposium we share both academic and personal insights. (English / SG-Certificate*)

Time: 19:30-21:15 hrs.
Admission is free, no registration required.

Ultimately, while giftedness can be a blessing, it can also lead to psychological issues that need to be taken seriously. It is important to be aware of the potential problems associated with giftedness and to provide support to those who are struggling.

Misdiagnoses and Misconceptions

There are a lot of misconceptions and stereotypes about giftedness. While many people immediately think about extreme intellectuals like Einstein when they hear giftedness, this is only part of the story.

Psychologist Sven Mathijssen will kick off the symposium with a lecture about the academic misconceptions and misdiagnoses of giftedness. In his interactive lecture he will try to teach the listeners more about the unknown side of this phenomenon. As an external PhD student from Tilburg University and a deputy principal for the gifted program of Radboud University, he has the academic background to share his knowledge.

What it can be like to be gifted

Being gifted doesn’t necessarily have to be a gift, it could also bring difficulties. In the second part of the symposium Leon Kerkhof will talk about what it is like to be gifted.

As a volunteer for FAMEUS he helps people recover from mental health problems. He himself has had experience with these struggles and will give the academic first part of this symposium a face and personal story.
