Opening Academisch jaar 2023

Opening Academic year 2023-2024: The Art of Digitalization

Date: Time: 16:00 Location: Auditorium

The Art of Digitalization. That is the theme of the Opening of the Academic Year 2023-2024 at Tilburg University in the Auditorium on Monday, September 4, 2023, at 16:00 hrs. All students and staff of Tilburg University are invited.

The Art of Digitalization

Digitalization offers opportunities. It makes us look at our work with different eyes, it makes us curious. Our science is driven by digitalization: it presents new opportunities for our research, and digital tools can be used to improve the quality of our education. While we embrace digitalization, we also explore the downsides of digitalization and encourage critical reflection on this important new ‘system technology’. We actively accommodate the many questions about digitalization in our research.

Keynote Alexandra van Huffelen

Dutch Minister for Digitalization

In the keynote, Dutch Minister for Digitalization Alexandra van Huffelen will share her thoughts on digitalization. Tilburg University is deeply honored that she has agreed to come and inspire our academic community and encourage us to play our role. Also in response to her keynote, Professor Boudewijn Haverkort will show to what extent we as an academic community address digitalization in our research.

Sabina Leonelli

Honorary doctorate

During this meeting, we will also present an honorary doctorate to Professor Sabina Leonelli of the University of Exeter. Professor Maureen Sie of the Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences (TSHD) is the honorary supervisor. The honorary doctorate will be presented to Professor Leonelli because of her academic merits, in particular in the field of the impact of Big and Open Data on research and the scientific and social implications of the implementation of Open Science. Her work connects the Humanities and Digital Sciences and is thus closely linked to the profile we pursue within our university strategy.
