Last Lecture – Dealing with diversity: A 40-year journey *

In his lecture Fons van de Vijver will focus on ethnic diversity from the realistic perspective that diversity is a given state of things. Studying the difference why some companies and countries are better able to use diversity is the relevant issue here. So, can a diversity climate enhance the well-being and learning results of students? (language: English)

Diversity has been studied for many years. Diversity is usually defined in terms of demographic characteristics such as gender, age and ethnicity. My presentation will mainly focus on ethnic diversity. I will argue that much work is based on a micro-perspective on diversity, where a macro-perspective is more fruitful. A good example of the micro-perspective is the large number of studies dealing with the question whether heterogeneous teams are less or more efficient than homogenous teams. A more realistic perspective would be to start from diversity as a given and understand the “diversity of diversity”. Why are some companies better able to use their diversity than others? The same for countries. I will illustrate the relevance of diversity climate for (among other things) the well-being and learning results of students, the satisfaction and efficiency of workers, and the health of immigrants

Fons van de Vijver is psychologist and professor of Cross-Cultural Psychology at Tilburg University, known for his work on cross-cultural research and on "methods and data analysis of comparative research".
