Ad Vingerhoets

When he started his PhD research on stress and psychobiological functioning in 1979, several exciting developments took place in psychology. Until then, psychology mainly focused on mental health, but at that time there was an increasing awareness that psychology might also contribute significantly to general medicine, somatic health. For example, as experts in behavior, psychologists felt themselves well equipped to design lifestyle interventions, such as stop smoking programs. In addition, psychoneuro-immunology was introduced which paved the way for innovative research on the effects of stress and emotions on somatic health.
