Managing Gender Identity at the Workplace *

In this symposium, we will discuss how organizations deal with the gender discussion. How do they approach gender within their diversity policy? How does someone who does not fit into the categories of ‘man’ or ‘woman’ view the policy? Is it actually necessary to develop policies around gender? Are all these labels necessary? At the symposium, these questions will be discussed from different perspectives. (language: English)

Managing gender identity at the workplace

Attitudes to gender identity and transgender issues have become the focus of considerable attention in recent years, as both famous and ordinary people have shared their experiences and stories. As a result, public awareness has increased. For example, many Dutch citizens are familiar with the fact that, in public transport, travelers are no longer addressed as ‘Ladies and gentlemen’ but with the gender-neutral ‘Dear travelers’. Even so, many employers find themselves unsure of how to navigate this shifting landscape.

While attitudes in some workplaces are changing, individuals regularly experience negative treatment and transphobia related to their gender identity, and only a few companies have policies focusing on gender identity. Carefully handling these issues can help reduce workplace conflict as well as potential fines, legal settlements, or loss of customers and revenue.

How do organizations deal with the ‘gender’ discussion?

In this symposium, we will discuss how organizations deal with the ‘gender’ discussion. How do they approach gender within their diversity policy? How does someone who does not fit into the categories of ‘man’ or ‘woman’ view the policy? Is it actually necessary to develop policies around gender? Are all these labels necessary? At the symposium, these questions will be discussed from different perspectives. Finally, we will also have a look to the future. What will be the best way ahead for organizations and associations to approach gender and the discussion surrounding it within their organization?

There will be contributions by Lena Knappert, Assistant Professor at the Department of Human Resource Studies at Tilburg University and David Pollard, Executive Director of the Workplace Pride Foundation.  There will, of course, be room for discussion and networking.
