Environmental Miniseries - Part IV
Money grows on Trees - Challenge Rabobank's sustainability director on sustainable banking

Bas Rüter is Director of Sustainability at Rabobank and acts as chairman of the Sustainability Platform of the Dutch Bankers Association. He has over 20 years of experience in sustainable banking (you may know him from his from his function as Investment Manager at Triodos bank) and holds a Master’s degree in Ecology from Wageningen University. Rabobank is on its way to be a frontrunner when it comes to stimulating the circular economy. Their investment focuses mainly on sustainable agriculture and food supply worldwide as well as in local communities. Also decreasing the carbon footprint of their employees is an important backbone of Rabobank’s sustainability policy. In this interactive masterclass we will, first of all, ask Rüter to shortly tell us about how sustainable entrepreneurship developed in the last 10 years.

The subsequent discussion with the audience will resolve around three topics: his personal life and contributions to sustainability, the balance between sustainability and profit and the impact that one business can make. We will introduce these topics with the following statements:

  • As a sustainable director of Rabobank, your personal carbon footprint should be minimal.
  • Banks should make responsible investments even if it goes at the expense of their profits.
  • Taking into account all the businesses that do not care about sustainability, it is not worth it to care so much, because you can only make a small impact on your own.

You can send in questions related to the three statements on the Facebook event page until 12:00am May 16th, and we will ask them for you. The best question wins a price!
