Supervisors: Prof. H.J. van den Herik, Prof. B.A. van de Walle, Prof. S. Ankolekar

The relation between Information Technology (IT) investments and business performance is a challenging topic of research. Managers are more than ever pressed towards proper use of resources and the realization of high returns on IT investments.

Adel Alhuraibi found that among the critical factors in the realization of such returns from IT investments is the IT Business Strategic Alignment (ITBSA). Furthermore, many organizations align their strategies (on paper), yet no significant impact is shown on organizational performance.

This research was focused on the relationship between ITBSA and performance. Factors that have a positive impact along the path from the Strategic Alignment towards the organizational performance were identified.Enterprise Governance of IT (EGIT), and Social Innovation at Work (SIW) were identified as critical factors along the path from ITBSA to organizational performance; and Alhuraibi investigated the effects of EGIT and SIW on this path.

The research has concluded that:

  1. Strategic alignment of IT and business (ITBSA) is vital to realize higher returns from IT investments.
  2. The ITBSA should be aimed at realizing an effective collaboration on social innovation at the workplace (SIW) which acts as a significant mediator between ITBSA and departmental performance.
  3. It is important to implement effective Enterprise Governance of IT (processes & structures) in order to realize higher benefits of ITBSA and the social innovation at the workplace (SIW).
