Predicting the World Champion

Wanna bet? What country will win the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, and what teams will reach the quarter finals? Of course, we don’t know the answers for sure yet, but we can predict with a certain probability. To that end, you need to consider many factors. For example, you should take into account the odds at the bookies, the FIFA ranking and the winner’s curse. Economists Martin van Tuijl and Jan van Ours have proved to have a better score with their statistical models than the highly regarded (and expensive!) Goldman Sachs World Cup Index 2014. So if you want to learn a bit more on practical statistics, or just to improve your chances to win your football pool, get your ass here!

Martin van Tuijl is an Associate Professor at the Department of Economics, Tilburg University. He is interested in macro-economic modelling and in the economic aspects of football (soccer). Concerning this research on the FIFA World Cup, Van Tuijl works with Jan van Ours, Professor of Applied Economics at Erasmus University Rotterdam.
