Abstract
The capacity to act, legal personhood, and the autonomy of cities in the Middle Ages and early modern period deserve new research. Prof. D. De ruysscher's inaugural address will look at how cities – even within the framework of states – were able to act independently, particularly in terms of their economy and trade relations, how this was legally underpinned, and how cities related to a central level.
