In Memoriam Fons van de Vijver (TSB)
TSB is saddened by the unexpected death of prof. dr. Fons van de Vijver, emeritus professor of Cross-Cultural Psychology.
The Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences is saddened by the unexpected death of prof. dr. Fons van de Vijver, emeritus professor of Cross-Cultural Psychology.
Fons passed away last Saturday in Brisbane, Australia. For many years, Fons was a valued and very productive member of the scientific staff at our school. He served both as vice dean of research and of education.
Fons started studying psychology at Tilburg University in 1975 and never left the university until he retired in 2018. His impressive career started early; his MSc thesis was published in a high ranking journal. In 1991 he received his PhD, and in 1999 became Professor of Cross-Cultural Psychology. He held extraordinary chairs in South Africa, Australia, and in Russia.
His achievements include over 400 publications, supervising 40 PhDs , and several awards, including the APA Award for Distinguished Contributions to the International Advancement of Psychology. He served as President of the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology and of the European Association of Psychological Assessment.
Fons was not only an eminent scientist and mentor. He was someone who believed in others, trusted in others, and listened to everyone; he was a special person.
We are grateful for his many contributions. He will be missed by many.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to Lona, his wife, and members of the family.
On behalf of the Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences
