Crowdfunding for innovative research into cardiac symptoms

Published: 15th October 2019 Last updated: 15th October 2019

Suppose you have symptoms of tiredness and chest pain. Do you go to your GP or do you wait and see? Thousands of people a year face this choice, especially women. Dr. Paula Mommersteeg is going to help these patients make better decisions about their own health.

Chest pain, fatigue and shortness of breath. These are common symptoms where the diagnosis is not always clear. Patients are uncertain and anxious and don’t know what to expect. Sometimes they don’t receive the right treatment, or conversely receive unnecessary treatments. It adds up to a heavy emotional burden, and the associated tension and stress can aggravate heart problems.

Dr. Paula Mommersteeg, from the Department of Medical and Clinical Psychology of Tilburg University in cooperation with  Elisabeth-Tweesteden hospital, wants to develop a decision-making tool to give the patient better information in preparation for their doctors appointment. Together with patients who were not diagnosed but do exhibit symptoms, she lists the advantages and disadvantages of their next steps. The doctor can prescribe medication, conduct an examination or choose to do nothing for a while.

Decision-making tool

Using this information, Mommersteeg will develop a decision-making tool that will contribute to everybody getting their best treatment. It will ensure that people do not miss out on any treatment, but also do not receive unnecessary treatments. It will save a lot of suffering and frustration. This research may impact hugely on the lives of many people.

Your support will really make a difference to their lives!  You can support the development of the decision-making tool. The donations will be doubled by the Dutch Heart Foundation.
