In Memoriam Esther Smits
It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of our colleague Esther Smits.
Esther started as an IT support officer at TLS in 2005, where she was the go-to person for instructors who experienced problems with Blackboard. In 2016, Esther switched to LIS. In addition to her regular support work, she was a member of the Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) where she effectively dealt with many IT security incidents. However, Esther was more attracted to the primary educational process so she was therefore immediately available when, one and a half years ago, all classes had to be taught online almost overnight. Esther took on the roll-out and coordination of ZOOM, assisted by ‘her’ pool of students. Many hundreds of sessions were facilitated, whereby she often received well-deserved praise.
In the new academic year, Esther was to take on the functional management of the thesis file at AS. Unfortunately it was not to be. In Esther, we lose a very committed and dedicated employee.
Esther will remain in our thoughts, in grateful memory of what she has meant to our university.
You can leave a message for Esther’s family on the remembrance page.
