Debate event 'Unlocking The New Common', LocHal Tilburg, September 19, 2020

Is the ‘old normal’ coming back? Will the changes that society is now undergoing as a result of the corona outbreak be permanent? What other changes await us? Count on a permanent 'New Common', say fifty Tilburg scientists in the book 'The New Common: How the Covid-19 Pandemic is transforming society. The first copies will be presented to Tilburg mayor Theo Weterings and Interpolis president Chantal Vergouw, during a debate with scientists and guests, both from the public and private domain, in Tilburg on September 19.

This book, edited by professors Emile Aarts, Hein Fleuren, Margriet Sitskoorn and Ton Wilthagen, describes the transition from the old to the new 'together'. The collection aims to provide popular scientific insights into the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic from the perspective of the social sciences and humanities, in which Tilburg University specializes. In doing so, the university is responding to the Outbreak Management Team's call to look at the effects of Covid-19 from other disciplines. Addressed are the opportunities and threats in the field of health care, welfare, young and older generations, local governance and participation and digital technology.

Sitskoorn: 'The New Common is a starting point for a New Together in which everyone with their own talents and expertise can contribute to the development and formation of our society. Important here is that it is not a static but a dynamic perspective'.

The publication of the English-language book will be accompanied by a debate event (in Dutch), online and offline, in which scientists, administrators, students and representatives from Tilburg society will participate (taking the corona measures into account, of course).
