The Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) 2020 was published on June 29th. A methodology change, explained below, led to more changes compared to last years ranking. For Tilburg University this had most impact on the ranking in Finance, Public Administration, and Law.

  • In Public Administration we moved up from the 51-75 band to place 27 worldwide, and from 7th in the Netherlands to 5th. This was largely driven by the score of 100 on the Citation Impact of our research in this field.
  • Political Sciences and Educational Sciences move up from the 201-300 band to 151-200.

Methodology change

The Shanghai Ranking is generally seen as one of the most influential rankings based on Research output. Universities are evaluated on the number of publications in high-impact journals, citation impact, international collaboration, and publications in TOP journals. The methodology of the 2020 ranking is different from the previous editions. Before, the total number of publications in journals indexed in the Web of Science was included. This year this metric has been replaced by publications in Q1 journals only. This means that only publications in the top 25% of journals – based on Journal Impact Factor – are considered. More information can be found on the Shanghai website.
