Vici grant for econometrician Johan van Leeuwaarden: Balancing load in the 'cloud'

Published: 14th April 2021 Last updated: 14th April 2021

Prof. Johan van Leeuwaarden (dept. Econometrics & Operations Research, TiSEM) has been awarded an NWO Vici grant for research into algorithms in the 'cloud'. The Vici grant amounts to 1.5 million euros. The cloud consists of a massive amount of computers. In the supermarket we choose our own queue, but who serves us in the cloud? In this project he will develop new algorithms that let us find quickly a short queue in enormous data centers.

Johan van Leeuwaarden is one of the 33 leading researchers who will each receive 1.5 million euros from the Dutch Research Council (NWO). This Vici grant will enable them to develop an innovative line of research and set up their own research group in the coming five years. Vici is one of the largest scientific grants for individuals in the Netherlands and targets advanced researchers. Van Leeuwaarden is also affiliated with Eindhoven University of Technology in the Mathematics and Computer Science group.

Together with Veni and Vidi, Vici is part of the NWO Talent Programme (Before: Talent Scheme). The Vici grant targets highly experienced researchers who have successfully demonstrated the ability to develop their own innovative lines of research, and to act as coaches for young researchers. Vici provides researchers with the opportunity to set up their own research group, often in anticipation of a tenured professorship.

NWO Vici-round 2020

Of the 287 proposals, 94 (33%) were submitted by women and 193 (67%) by men. Overall, 13 female candidates and 20 male candidates were awarded a grant.
