World Mental health day - Disclosure of mental health issues in the workplace

Thursday, October 10 is World Mental Health Day, a day with the overall objective of raising awareness for mental health issues around the world and mobilizing efforts in support of mental health.

Within Tranzo's 'Academic Collaborative Center on Work and Health', research has been done on the advantages and disadvantages of disclosure of mental health issues in the work environment, and on the question which factors influence a good outcome/sustainable employability. The research showed that there are many factors of influence on the disclosure outcome, most of which cannot be influenced by the disclosure. For example, as an individual you cannot influence how the economy is doing, what kind of complaints you have, or how serious your symptoms are. However, the researchers also found that there is an important aspect that people can influence themselves, which is the disclosure process itself. For example, the content, timing and style of communication proved to be very important for the outcome of disclosure.

Subsequently, the researchers, together with the organisation 'Samen Sterk Zonder Stigma' (Together Strong Without Stigma), designed the following infographic, which contains precisely those tips that people themselves can influence, in order to positively influence their chances for a good outcome.
