Marianne van Woerkom to receive a grant of €500,000

Dr Marianne van Woerkom (dept. of HR-Studies, TSB) has been awarded a grant of 500,000 euros by NRO (Nederlands Regieorgaan Onderwijsonderzoek) for a three-year project on professional development of teachers.

The project is based on a positive psychology approach, and more in particular on a strengths-based approach. A central proposition is that when teachers are supported in identifying and furthering their strengths, this may lead to more professional development than when they are urged to remediate their deficits.

One part of this project will include field experiments with strengths-based interventions in various colleges for Vocational Education and Training (in Dutch: MBO instellingen). In another part of this project, a Professional Learning Community (PLC) will be set up in which researchers, trainers and representatives of the participating VET colleges collaborate to develop, test, and implement concrete instruments (e.g., manuals and instruction video’s) that can support VET colleges, team leaders and individual teachers in enhancing professional development.

Marianne van Woerkom is associate professor at the Department of Human Resource Studies of the Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences (TSB).
