New Department of Public Law and Governance (PLG)
The TLS board proudly announces that of 1 January 2019, the Departments of Politics and Public Administration, European and International Public Law and Public Law, Jurisprudence and Legal History are to merge into a new Department. The new unit will be called the Department of Public Law and Governance (PLG). The merger is a result of consultations with the members of the three departments. The Faculty Council agreed with this merger. The collaboration with TiSEM in the Tilburg Institute of Governance (TIG) will be continued and we are confident that it will be empowered.
The Heads of the departments concerned expressed their conviction that this new department will create the conditions for strengthening teaching, research and support and allow new opportunities for cooperation within and without the department. The merger is inspired by a joint research interest. Whereas many scholars in the field of public law and public administration primarily focus on their internal dynamics, the Tilburg scholars are driven by a focus on both their context and foundations. The research ambition of the new department is to reinvent publicness (public law and public administration) in the context of globalization, the rise of the regulatory state, and the diminishing of solidarity within societies. Obviously, this research focus will be reflected in the educational programs.
The new department will officially be established on 1th January 2019. However, the merger will be implemented over a period of a few months. In the meantime existing departmental institutions and services will continue to function as they did in the past until they are adapted to the new setting. The head of the new department will be appointed shortly.
