After many years of social debate and seeking consensus it appears likely that starting in 2022 the Dutch pension system will be undergoing drastic changes. The system will become more individualized, in terms of both entitlement and risk distribution. The tax and labor legislation need to change accordingly.

For years now, that radical pension system reform has been a key theme of Bastiaan Starink’s research. He primarily focuses on the tax aspects of collective pensions and the labor market.

“Financially, politically, socially, and scientifically, pensions are a fascinating area that generates major research questions,” he says. “The connection between pensions and the labor market is an essentially interdisciplinary field of study in which tax, legal, economic, and societal concerns substantially overlap.”

Bastiaan Starink LLM PhD (1980) has worked at Tilburg University since 2004. He graduated in Tax Law at Tilburg University and, in 2015, also obtained his doctorate there. Over the past 15 years, he has established himself as a recognized authority in his field. He is also a partner at PwC.
