Student satisfaction at Tilburg University continues to rise
PRESS RELEASE 12 May 2016 - In 2016, students at Tilburg University are even more positive about their programs than in previous years. As regards overall student satisfaction on programs, Tilburg University now ranks third in the list of all thirteen universities in the Netherlands. This is shown by the figures from the annual National Student Survey (NSE) over 2015-2016.
Overall student satisfaction on programs increased from 3.92 (on a scale of 1 to 5) in 2013, to 4.00 in 2014 and 4.09 in 2015 to an average of 4.13 in 2016. This means that Tilburg University scores higher than the national average (4.07).
In 2015, Tilburg University tied for third place with Maastricht University and Radboud University Nijmegen. In 2014, Tilburg University ranked 6th, and 10th in 2013.
The Executive Board is very pleased with these results: "We are continuously developing our courses, curriculum and facilities and in this process we discuss with our students. This approach is fruitful."
The National Student Survey (NSE) is a large-scale, nationwide survey: all students at research universities and universities of applied sciences are invited every year to give their opinion on the degree program they are pursuing. A total of 4,209 Tilburg University students participated in the 2016 NSE (i.e., a response of 38%). In the final report, the statements in the survey have been combined into 17 main themes.
As regards the theme of accommodation, Tilburg University scores the highest average of all universities. For the themes of academic skills acquired, assessment and grading, information provision, study load, placement experience, and study environment, Tilburg University scores among the national top 3. We also score higher than the national average on content, teachers, program schedule, and quality care.
The various efforts to improve students’ employability skills, giving them a better foundation to successfully compete in the job market, have led to a strong increase in student satisfaction on career preparation. Satisfaction on the theme of study facilities has decreased slightly. In conformity with the wishes of many students, the university is going to realize the extension of the study facilities with approximately 140 extra independent study places all over the campus, which had already been scheduled for the summer break.
The NSE results are used by Tilburg University every year to optimize its service provision to students and to analyse and improve the quality of individual programs. The plans for improvement generated as a result will help to enhance the quality of the teaching.
