Tilburg University launches new Bachelor’s program aimed at entrepreneurship

Published: 06th January 2020 Last updated: 28th December 2020

The Tilburg School of Economics and Management starts with a new Bachelor’s program in September 2020: Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation. The new Bachelor’s is a unique academic degree program in the Netherlands that fully focuses on starting up new enterprises and stimulating innovation within existing companies or organizations. The business community and government authorities will be actively involved.

Research has shown that the need for entrepreneurs and enterprising people will only increase in the coming decades. Not only do entrepreneurs drive economic growth, socially oriented entrepreneurs also contribute to solutions to environmental and socials issues. Employers need workers who combine academic analytical skills with relevant knowledge and such entrepreneurial competencies as pro-activity, independence, flexibility, perseverance, and sound communication skills.

The curriculum

The curriculum is based on three phases: awakening, developing, and accelerating. Every year has a specific focus:

Year 1: Awakening

Students are introduced to the basic principles of entrepreneurship, corporate innovation, and strategy. Theory and practice will be connected by working on projects. Skills and attitudes will also be taken into account.

Year 2: Developing

The emphasis shifts towards alternative perspectives of and specific contexts for entrepreneurship. Students gain insight into entrepreneurship in the context of start-ups and existing enterprises and as well as into sustainable entrepreneurship.

Year 3 - Accelerating

This phase consists of an international exchange program or minor, a specialization, and a graduation project to enable students to implement what they have learned in a real environment.

Vice-Dean for Education Jeroen Kuilman: “Entrepreneurship is highly valued at Tilburg University. This qualitatively strong program is therefore supported by all sections of the university as well as by entrepreneurs and companies. It is with great pride and confidence that we look forward to welcoming the first entrepreneurship students to Tilburg for this Bachelor's program, which is unique in the Netherlands.”
