Eviane Leidig awarded fellowship with Ico Maly for research on far-right networks
20th April 2022Eviane Leidig, who is working at the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism (ICCT), a think tank based in The Hague, joining TSHD shortly, received a Marie Sklodowska Curie Actions postdoctoral fellowship with Ico Maly as supervisor for the project: 'From Keyboard Warrior to Digital Army: Mapping Far-Right Networked Publics (MAFNET)'.

Children learn second language words better through more involvement with robots
14th April 2022When children interact with robots over a long period of time, they inevitably develop a relationship with them. Mirjam de Haas investigated how this relationship and involvement with the robot can change over time due to the robot's behavior. More familiarity with the robot leads to better learning performance in the long run. De Haas will receive her doctorate on April 20.

NWO-Veni grants for four promising Tilburg researchers
11th April 2022The Dutch Research Council (NWO) has awarded four young promising scientists from Tilburg University a Veni grant worth up to 280,000 euros. The grant provides the laureates with the opportunity to further elaborate their own ideas during a period of three years.

Esther Keymolen appointed Professor of Digital Technology Regulation
01st April 2022Tilburg University has appointed Dr. Esther Keymolen Professor of Digital Regulation as of 1 April 2022. With her research Dr. Keymolen will contribute to a conceptual recalibration of key concepts such as responsibility and trustworthiness in the legal domain.

ARTE documentary features work TSHD nonverbal communication
30th March 2022On April 2 (starting at 23.15 pm) the European channel ARTE will broadcast a documentary on the power of the face and voice (German title: Die Magie von Gesicht und Stimme), in which also the work conducted at Tilburg University on non-verbal communication receives quite some attention. The documentary can already be viewed on the ARTE website.

TSHD Selection “PhDs in the Humanities” 2022
30th March 2022This year, TSHD has again been invited to submit PhD proposals for the NWO program “PhDs in the Humanities”. After the first assessment round, the TSHD selection committee invited 6 of the candidates to pitch their proposal. Based on this pitch session, 3 proposals were nominated to be submitted to NWO.

29th March 2022Sinan Çankaya, Raoul de Jong, Lucas Waagmeester and Laura Jansen are the nominees for the E. du Perron Prize that will be awarded on May 19. Paul Scheffer, Emeritus Professor of European studies, will then hold the E. du Perron lecture.

New Scientist special about Zero Hunger Lab
24th March 2022On March 24th the New Scientist special dedicated to the Zero Hunger Lab was presented. It gives a closer look at what the researchers of the Zero Hunger Lab have already achieved with their research and what they are aiming for in the (middle)long term. This special will increase the visibility of the Zero Hunger Lab and contribute to the goal of fighting hunger with data science.

Diversity research can learn from the mistakes made by the field of International Business
22nd March 2022The field of International Business (IB) has flourished in an era of unprecedented globalization. But we now live in a time of de-globalization, and the discourse has shifted from differences between countries to differences within countries, leading to an increasing focus on diversity. At the same time old mistakes threaten to be repeated. Where previously IB emphasized the positive aspects of internationalization, now the mantra is that “diversity is good”. In the valedictory address delivered by Prof. Niels Noorderhaven on March 25, he will argue that diversity research can learn from the mistakes made by the field of IB.

EU funds research project CircoMod EU for modeling the circular economy to mitigate climate change
21st March 2022With increasing populations and expanding wealth, global material consumption has seen a precipitous increase. These materials are often discarded after use (the so-called linear model). Moreover, the massive use and production of materials are also associated with the extensive use of energy. The emissions from structural materials are often difficult to decarbonise. As such, high levels of material consumption pose a major challenge for meeting climate targets. In this context, the circular economy (CE) has been presented as an alternative to the current linear model.
