Improving cultural heritage accessibility with AI gets major funding
13th July 2023The HAICu project of a national consortium of universities, libraries, citizens and partners from the cultural sector receives funding from the NWO as part of the National Science Agenda. The project focuses on using artificial intelligence to improve the accessibility of cultural heritage to citizens.

Tilburg University and the City of Tilburg develop joint broad prosperity research program
11th July 2023On July 11, 2023, Tilburg University and the City of Tilburg have adopted a roadmap for a co-creative research program in the field of broad prosperity in the local communities and broad prosperity in business. This research program is part of the agreement between the City and the university to take cooperation to an even higher level. For instance, the parties contribute to Tilburg Kennisstad and to the movement to help the city-with-a-university develop into a proper university city.

Dutch universities to take different approach to rankings
11th July 2023The Dutch universities will take a more critical stance towards global university ranking. These so-called league tables have methodological shortcomings and their assessment of the research achievements of universities is too one-sided, being merely based on the number of publications and citations. This is at odds with the Recognition & Rewards program, through which Dutch universities emphasize quality rather than quantity. This is the conclusion of an expert group advising the Board of Universities of the Netherlands (UNL).

Open Letter on the Greece Boat Disaster: Questions of International Law
11th July 2023In an open letter addressed to Greek and EU authorities, 300 academics turn their attention to the migrant shipwreck of 14 June 2023 off the coast of Pylos, Greece, resulting in the loss of an estimated 650 lives. They emphasize that Greece did not only have the right but also the duty to intervene, assist and rescue those on board. Dr. Mariana Gkliati, Assistant Professor of Migration and Asylum Law at Tilburg University is one of the initiators of this letter.

Marga Klompé educational building: Highest point reached
11th July 2023On Monday, July 10, 2023, the highest point was reached in the construction of the new Marga Klompé educational building. An important milestone! The educational building is being constructed by BAM Bouw en Techniek using circular construction materials. Tilburg University is very ambitious with respect to sustainability and is taking another big step forward with this building.

Grant applicants put in the limelight
10th July 2023Grant winners at Tilburg University jointly managed to raise more than 24 million euros in 2022. Acquiring research grants and research awards, national and international, is very important for the university. Securing (large) grants is good for the scientific prestige of the researcher concerned, the research group, and the university as a whole.

Significant increase in chronic anxiety and depressive symptoms in young adults
07th July 2023Since the corona outbreak, the number of young adults with moderate to severe chronic anxiety and depressive symptoms has increased sharply. In the year before the corona outbreak, 16.7% of 18-24-year-olds suffered from moderate to severe chronic anxiety and depressive symptoms. They were experiencing these complaints in March 2019, November 2019 and in March 2020. In the year after the corona outbreak, this had increased to 21.4%. This translates to an increase of about 73,000 young adults.

Four Tilburg researchers receive NWO Open Competition SSH XS funding
06th July 2023The awards of round 4 of the Open Competition SSH XS pilot programme are a fact. Four researchers of Tilburg University will start with a promising idea or an innovative and high-risk initiative. There is plenty of room for experimentation and innovation. EUR 2.4 million in funding for four projects under the Digital Sciences for Society program
06th July 2023In the coming years and through its Digital Sciences for Society program, Tilburg University invests in research on the interface of digital sciences, social sciences and the humanities that contributes to solving today’s major challenges. This week, EUR 2.4 million was awarded to four multiyear research projects.

Impact of war on people with intellectual disabilities in Ukraine
04th July 2023New research paints a worrisome picture of the impact of the war on people with intellectual disabilities in Ukraine. Even more than others they suffer from a lack of basic needs, shelter or abilities to flee the war. It is about time for more inclusive disaster preparedness, says professor Petri Embregts of the Academic Collaborative Center 'Living with intellectual disabilities at Tilburg University.

Erik Sengers appointed as Endowed Professor of Chaplaincy Studies in the Military
04th July 2023The Executive Board has appointed Dr. Erik Sengers as Endowed Professor of Chaplaincy Studies in the Military at the Tilburg School of Catholic Theology (TST). This Chair has been established by the Military Ordinariate of the Netherlands (Ordinariaat voor de Nederlandse Strijdkrachten), that provides pastoral care to Roman Catholics serving in the Dutch Armed Forces. The objective of the Chair is researching the actions of pastoral care within the armed forces and theological reflection on issues of peace and security as they arise within the Dutch armed forces. The appointment is for a period of five years.
