European Universities Alliance ENGAGE.EU receives follow-up grant
03rd July 2023The European Commission has announced that ENGAGE.EU is to receive a follow-up grant to the amount of € 14.4 million for further elaborating the mobility and collaboration among the nine participating European universities. The Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science supports Tilburg University’s efforts with an additional € 1 million.

Using influencers to combat cyberbullying
03rd July 2023Cyberbullying or online bullying is a problem that affects a lot of children and young people. Being a victim of cyberbullying is often associated with serious mental health problems. Researchers at Tilburg University have used social media influencers to combat cyberbullying. Influencers have the potential to successfully spread anti-bullying messages to their young followers. Together with partners in six European countries, the researchers ran a campaign among students between the ages of 10 and 18 over the past two months to address cyberbullying. This campaign, called TABASCO, indicating the spicy nature of cyberbullying, was funded by the European Erasmus+ program.

Deprez building central place for entrepreneurship after the summer
30th June 2023Tilburg University is busy renovating Deprez building in Spoorzone in the Tilburg city center. From the start of the academic year 2023-2024, the building, which used to accommodate MindLabs, will be a central place for entrepreneurship.

Jean-Claude Laprie Prize 2023 for paper reliable computing systems for Dean Haverkort
30th June 2023Dean of the Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences Boudewijn Haverkort, together with co-authors, received the Jean-Claude Laprie Award in Porto on June 29. The award ceremony took place during the annual IFIP/IEEE Congress on Dependable Systems & Networks.

Two Vidi grants for Johan Wolswinkel and Tineke Snijders
29th June 2023The NWO has awarded two Vidi grants to Tilburg Scientists. Professor of Administrative Law, Market and Data Johan Wolswinkel of Tilburg Law School receives a grant for his research: Decision-making in times of open government: from "rule transparency" to "case transparency". And Dr. Tineke Snijders of the Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences receives a Vidi for her research: Listening with your eyes in the developing brain.

Little wonder then that this professor emeritus of AI and Data Science continues to be involved in research and developments in his area of expertise. Corien Prins: Government must open eyes to impact AI and digital disruption
28th June 2023Legal tools available for consumer protection, liability and digital archiving are insufficient to properly manage the development of Artificial Intelligence, argues Professor of Law and Computerization Corien Prins of the Tilburg Law School. Europe has now drafted initial legislation, which she welcomes, but the approach is still "fledgling", she states in an NRC-interview in June 25.

Dr. ir. Roy Lindelauf appointed Professor as endowed chair of Data Science, Safety & Security
27th June 2023The Board of Governors has appointed Dr. ir. Roy Lindelauf as endowed Professor of the Chair of Data Science, Safety & Security. The appointment in the Department of Cognitive Science and AI at Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences, is for a period of five years, effective June 1, 2023. The chair is subsidized by the Dutch Ministry of Defense. Lindelauf, who works at this Ministry, will strengthen the faculty's fast-growing data science discipline.

Guide for supervisors improves support for employees with mental health issues
27th June 2023A new, science-based approach can help supervisors support their employees with mental health issues. It involves identifying and discussing mental problems with employees and adjusting the work environment in a timely fashion to prevent absenteeism. This is shown by Suzanne van Hees in her PhD research. She will defend her PhD thesis at Tilburg University on Friday, June 30, 2023.

'Morality in academic education makes a comeback'
23rd June 2023Joining forces to make the world a better place, more room for reflection in academia and the hope that students will start seeing each other less as competitors and more as companions. These are some of the thoughts of departing Dean of Tilburg University College Alkeline van Lenning. At the end of this month she is saying farewell to the university where she has worked for over forty years.

Thesis Award for research on cultural omnivores: “Cultural taste says a lot about your social position”
23rd June 2023Master’s student of Sociology Romy Oomens has won the Mens & Maatschappij Master’s Thesis Award with her study of the phenomenon of ‘cultural omnivorism’. Her study will be published in the academic journal of the same name. Romy investigated whether educational level and intergenerational mobility cause people to develop a more exclusive or, on the contrary, a broader cultural taste.

21st June 2023At the kick-off symposium of the Academic Collaborative Center for Digital Health & Mental Wellbeing on 13 June, scientists and social partners together took a significant step in the development of a cooperation agenda for the Center. The bottom-up approach, in which co-creation is used to decide what research questions should receive attention, is characteristic of the working method adopted by the University-wide Academic Collaborative Centers.
