Traditional accountant must move with the times, or it is the end of the road
PRESS RELEASE 8-11-2018 – In 2020 we will have 40 zettabytes of stored data at our disposal, and it is predicted that after the launch of the ‘Internet of things’ in 2020 over 30 billion devices will be connected wirelessly and continuously exchanging data. In addition, the quantum computer and the latest developments in artificial intelligence point to data processing making great strides. The obvious outcome is a paradigm shift from exchanging documents to exchanging data and this will inevitably have a major impact on accounting information systems and, specifically, accountancy as a profession. This in a nutshell is the theme of the farewell address Professor Verkruijsse will deliver at Tilburg University on November 9.

Economic knowledge and understanding aid environmental transitions
Inaugural address by Professor Herman Vollebergh
PERSBERICHT 27 september 2018 - Environmental concerns loom larger than ever before. While the Paris Agreement evinces an ambitious challenge, politicians are struggling to press ahead and in the Netherlands, too, it remains to be seen whether this climate agreement initiates the great leap forwards. At the same time, criticism of the science of economics is rising, fueled by Kate Raworth’s advocacy of ‘doughnut economics’. She argues that economists have next to nothing to say about the structural social changes deemed necessary, ‘transitions’, given their preoccupation with non-existing rational people in a too limited linear world.
More transparency in corporation tax?
Double inaugural address by Professors Stan Stevens and Ton Stevens
The Panama papers exposed many irregularities concerning corporations that divert money to tax havens. As calls for transparency are growing, the question that is raised with increasing frequency is whether the time has come for corporation tax to be reformed. In their inaugural address on September 14, Professors Stan Stevens and Ton Stevens will consider two aspects of fiscal transparency. The first of these is transparency in terms of public access to information about taxation, the government’s tax policy, and companies’ fiscal strategies. The second aspect is transparency in terms of training the fiscal camera on the stakeholders behind the company’s legal form. Both professors will address the question whether more fiscal transparency is advisable.
