Jan Peter van den Toren appointed as Professor of Practice in ‘Entrepreneurship in Ecosystems’
PRESS RELEASE 22 May 2018 - Tilburg University has appointed Jan Peter van den Toren as Professor of Practice in ‘Entrepreneurship in Ecosystems’, effective May 1, 2018. Van den Toren will bring his personal entrepreneurship and his expertise in the field of stimulating entrepreneurship to bear on the education and research at the Tilburg School of Economics and Management. Van den Toren is a partner and managing director of Birch Consultants BV.
Three teachers receive prestigious Comenius grants
NWO/NRO (Netherlands Initiative for Education Research) has awarded teachers Tessa Leesen of University College and Marie Postma of the Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences a Senior Fellowship. This was announced by NWO today. Earlier this month, a Comenius Teacher project initiated by Rob Jansen of the Tilburg School of Behavioral Sciences, in collaboration with Remco Mannak and John Goedee, was awarded a grant.
Koen Becking appointed Honorary Professor at Stellenbosch University
Press release - 27/3/2018 - Tilburg University President Koen Becking has been appointed Honorary Professor of the School of Public Leadership (SPL) at Stellenbosch University (SU) in South Africa. He has been an Extraordinary Professor at Stellenbosch since 2003, but has now been appointed Honorary Professor in recognition of his authority and example as public leader who can also contribute to strengthening ties between Tilburg and SU.
Ian Sumner appointed as Professor of Private International Law and Family Law
PRESS RELEASE 19 March 2018 - Tilburg University has appointed Dr. Ian Sumner as Professor of Private International Law and Family Law. Sumner’s research deals with methods that might be used to improve laws and regulations governing cross-border family disputes. The chair is part of the Tilburg Institute of Private Law at Tilburg Law School.
Keuzegids Masters 2018: Tilburg University offers eight top programs
According to the Keuzegids Masters 2018, no fewer than eight of Tilburg University’s Master’s programs are among the best Dutch universities have to offer. These Master’s programs have been awarded the ‘top program’ quality label. An additional seven Master’s programs rank first in their field.
Sigrid Suetens appointed as Professor of Behavioral Economics

Whistleblowers often suffer from severe psychological problems
PRESS RELEASE 19 February 2018 - Whistleblowers play a very important and indispensable role in society. However the effects of blowing the whistle on whistleblowers are dramatic, according to a new empirical study of Tilburg University. About 80% report very negative effects on work and wages, and almost 50% very negative effects on family life. About 45% suffer from clinical levels of mental health problems such as anxiety and/or depressive symptoms.
Depending on PTSD-symptoms levels, traumas have a negative or positive impact on loneliness
PRESS RELEASE 24 January 2018 - Loneliness weakens the (mental) health. After traumatic events, some of the victims suffer from loneliness. Victims with very severe PTSD-symptom levels more often suffer from loneliness than victims with very low PTS-symptom levels. But, non-victims more often suffer from loneliness than victims with very low PTS-symptom levels.
Hugo Reumkens appointed Chair of the Tilburg University Board of Governors
Persbericht 28 december 2017 - Lawyer Hugo Reumkens (Tilburg, 1969) has been appointed Chairperson of the Tilburg University Board of Governors as of 1 January 2018. Reumkens is a partner at the renowned Amsterdam law firm Van Doorne, which advises leading Dutch and international companies, financial service providers, the semi-public sector and governmental institutions. The firm also fulfills the role of Government attorney.
Paulina Snijders appointed Vice-President of the Executive Board

Climate-smart agriculture requires radical policy changes
PRESS RELEASE 11 December 2017 - At all levels of agricultural regulation – national, European, and international – important changes are required to be able to address the challenges of climate change. Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) is crucial, on the one hand, to mitigate climate damage to the agricultural sector and, on the other hand, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as well as increase the food production for the growing world population. However, the legal instruments to stimulate CSA are absent or are inadequately developed.
Traumas do not impact job satisfaction
PRESS RELEASE 11 December 2017 - Each year about a quarter of all workers will be confronted potentially traumatic events, such as crime, accidents, serious illness or death of a significant other. Part of the affected workers will develop very severe posttraumatic stress symptoms. However, in contrast to our expectations these events and symptoms do not have a negative impact on job satisfaction.
For the 4th time: Tilburg University best communicating university
7 December 2017 - For the fourth time in a row, Tilburg University has been voted the best communicating university in the biannual Impact Ranking by the Hague Bureau ScienceWorks and Elsevier. This ranking, that consists of various components, indicates which university has had most social impact. The award was presented at a conference on social impact in the humanities and social and behavioral sciences in Amsterdam on December 7.
Slavery in Libya organised by ‘fixers’ – Research Tilburg University confirms CNN reports
Pressrelease 1-12-2017 - Academic researchers of Tilburg University come to the conclusion that slavery in Libya is part of a large organisation of human trafficking in which ‘fixers’ collaborate with some high officials in Africa and in Europe. CNN reported two weeks ago that Africans are auctioned in Libya.
