At Tilburg University, you can hone your skills through a range of extracurricular activities and opportunities outside the classroom.
You can, for example, participate in our exciting and challenging on top programs, or take an internship and gain work experience in your field of interest. You can also broaden your horizon by following workshops or trainings, or by becoming an active member in a study association.
Culture and sports
Symposia and debates
Throughout the year, Academic Forum organizes symposia, debates, and small-scale exchanges focusing on scientific, social and ideological issues.
Cultural associations and places
There are a number of cultural associations and places dedicated to theater, drama, and musical foundation. Furthermore, Tilburg University also provides spaces for performances and rehearsals, and also has a music room with a piano which can be freely used.
Students have ranked Tilburg University's Sports Center as the best sports center in the Netherlands. It offers a broad program of activities and facilities for both recreational users and those who wish to play sports at a competitive level. You can work out at any time from early morning to late evening. Sports Center membership is offered at a price appropriate to a student budget.
By paying a small fee, you will have access to a wide range of sport activities such as aerobics and dance, boxing and martial arts, ball sports, and water, snow and ice sports. You can also join a sports association and participate in competitions.
Courses and workshops
You are allowed to follow extra courses next to your studies, including courses from other Schools. In addition, you can follow language courses at the Language Center, or participate in the Tilburg University Summer School in July and August.
Free language course
Do you want to improve your skills in Dutch or another foreign language? Or do you want to add a whole new language to your skills? Our Language Center offers a wide array of courses and training in nine languages at several levels of proficiency: Arabic, Chinese, German, English, French, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, and Spanish.
The ability to speak another language is invaluable for participation in an international exchange program as well as for your future career.
At the start of your studies, you will receive free language course vouchers worth a total of 12 ECTS. These vouchers give you the opportunity to attend language courses for free.
Training courses and workshops
Besides your regular curriculum, you can enhance your professional and personal skills with a variety of courses and workshops offered by the Student Desk or with additional training courses offered by Career Services. Some of these courses and workshops are ‘How to find a job in the Netherlands’ (for non-Dutch students), a LinkedIn workshop, and an ‘Intercultural Communication’ workshop.
Study and student associations
Tilburg University is home to a wide range of student associations and societies. They are a great way to meet like-minded students and make friends. There are organizations for arts and culture, sports, student politics and philosophy, as well as study-related associations. You will also find organizations aimed specifically at international students which organize all kinds of social activities.
Becoming active in an association provides the ideal opportunity to develop your skills and talents, both personally and academically.
If you aspire to start your own company either now or in the future, Tilburg University offers you many ways to develop or advance your entrepreneurial skills and ambitions:
- Tilburg Center of Entrepreneurship offers educational programs on both Bachelor’s and Master’s levels. It aims to create both academic and practical insights, which is why some of the courses contain a web-based skills training.
- You will have access to Starterslift, an organization that functions exclusively to help startups bring their products or services to market.
- You will have the chance to rent an office via the Business Center.
- At the Academic Business Club you can exchange experiences and best practices with fellow student entrepreneurs.

Internships and entry-level jobs
Internships offer excellent opportunities for getting acquainted with the job market. Many students combine an internship with a thesis and carry out their research at the host company. There are many ways of arranging an internship during your Bachelor’s studies.

Tilburg University Summer School
Tilburg University Summer School: your perfect start in Tilburg. Before starting your studies in September, you will have the opportunity to take interesting and intensive high-quality courses combined with a fun-packed social program to discover the Dutch culture and the city of Tilburg.
Make the most of your summer
- You gain academic advantage and improve your language skills by following one of the many language courses.
- You can start your academic career by getting familiar with Dutch culture and exploring student life in Tilburg.
- You will meet new people from all over the world.
- You can use your language vouchers to finance the biggest part of your Dutch, English, Spanish or Chinese summer course.
- By participating in these courses, you can obtain official credits (2 to 8 ECTS).
- You can participate in our Summer School now or later, it is also open for students of our university!
Do you want to learn Dutch or improve your English? Or have you always wanted to learn Spanish or Chinese? Then follow one of our language courses! For students who are currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s program, it is also possible to attend the other courses offered by the Summer School. If you want to deepen your knowledge in a particular domain, you can follow a thematic course in the field of Economics, Law, Management & Organization and Psychology.
Besides first-rate interactive courses, Tilburg University Summer School includes a fun packed social program offering you a large number of activities, such as city trips, sports, diners and parties. During the social program you have the opportunity to get to know students from different countries and cultures. Are you looking for an additional dimension to your Bachelor's studies? Then you can widen your academic horizon in one of the Tilburg University programs of excellence. The Honors Program, the Outreaching Program, and the Excellence Program all offer challenging and inspiring education. Develop yourself, deepen your interests, and get to know other disciplines. It is the ideal way to show more of yourself.
Discourses on Europe / Honors Program
If you are interested in an even greater intellectual challenge, or in a chance to broaden your scientific knowledge, you will have the opportunity to take part in the Discourses on Europe / Honors Program. This is a supplementary program consisting of four courses.
The focus of the program is on Europe, which will be studied from the vantage points of several disciplines in the humanities and social sciences and by discussing both historical and contemporary issues and developments. The program aims at breaking down traditional distinctions between the West and the East and the North and the South in the light of important European and global transformations that are taking place today.
The program leads to a Tilburg University Honors Certificate in addition to your Bachelor's degree.
Outreaching Honors Program
The Outreaching Honors Program is an extracurricular two-year program of excellence for outstanding Bachelor's students of all Schools at Tilburg University. It takes place in the second and third year of studies.
The Outreaching Honors Program is an opportunity to make a real contribution to society while expanding your own career prospects by developing sustainable leadership and personal skills. Master classes with industry professionals, lab sessions supervised by notable professors, internships and team activities including a study trip are just part of what you can expect from this program.
The Excellence Scholarship is a grant of € 2,500 up to a maximum of € 5,000 in case of a Master's program abroad (depending on the tuition fee abroad). The scholarship must be used for a Master's program abroad or a Research Master’s program at Tilburg University.
To qualify for an Excellence Scholarship, you must have obtained a complete Bachelor's degree without exemptions within the prescribed period of three years’ time, and with an average result of no less than 8 out of 10 over 180 compulsory credits. If you have an acknowledged study delay or a delay caused by being actively involved in the management of a student organization or by management participation, this will be taken into account during the application process.
